Brunswick, GA – For years, I’ve been speeding past a local treasure that’s been around since 1975 — Willie’s Wee-Nee Wagon. I ate at Willie's once when I moved to Brunswick in 2021, but could taste the impact of a post COVID-19 restaurant scene. Willie's is one of those places you always say you'll stop at, but sometimes life keeps you moving and making a habit of meals on the go. This summer, while on the way to a lunch meeting at the Enchanted Dollhouse, I finally made the time to drop in.
After the passing of the original owners, Willie’s was eventually purchased by Donte Habersham, local powerhouse and owner of Mr. Shuck's Seafood. Donte has built a reputation for bringing new life and creativity to award-winning and timeless flavors and has seen much success with his restaurant and food truck.
Like during my initial visit, I ordered a fried porkchop sandwich and let me tell you, the difference was night and day. From the savory and balanced flavors to the complimentary textures and ratio of the bun, my meal was so much better than before. I couldn’t help but make a few involuntary sounds (and even a little happy dance) at the difference. Sometimes words just don’t do food justice.
Thank you to Rhonda Mullens for suggesting we grab lunch there and always keeping me up to date on the the local hidden gems and best bites to eat— Willie’s definitely still has it.
